The day finally came when Bruno made it back to a yoga class. It had been countless months since he had stepped regularly onto a yoga mat and some (mainly him) thought he might never return to his practice. Truth is, he hadn’t been missing his yoga at all, the only difference was the style.
Perhaps the stars aligned, or it was the moon at the right temperature . Maybe that weekend with The ManKind Project left an imprint on him. Whatever the reason there he was, with Laura Antelmi’s Yoga Foundations class at the Iyengar Yoga Center of Boulder. It wasn’t his first visit to the studio. In 2017 Bruno attended a dozen classes from Laura and wrote many blogs like this one, but we had to redesign the website, and they all got lost in cyber-trash. Disclaimer: This is my first post in a while, bare with me while I get my voice back. We are also looking for more authros, if you want to be one, click here.
Laura’s Teaching Style
The flow was great, a typical Iyengar yoga class, lots of props all over the place, slow pace, tons of cues and a good amount of elders in the room. Laura cracked a handful of yoga jokes, inviting us to go deeper into our forward fold and adding, for contrast, a reminder that “there is nothing down there”. She also placed us on a few supported inversions, cooling poses, “even though we are already cool enough”.
I love Laura’s laid back style for teaching yoga classes, easy to believe she has been doing it for over 30 years. In fact, the Iyengar Yoga Center of Boulder turned 28 years old a week ago. Laura has been the owner and stand-alone teacher this whole time, keeping prices affordable and taking care of people with severe medical challenges.
Another beautiful characteristic from Laura’s teaching style is that she looks at every student as if she knew them for a long time. Every time she looks or talks to me, it seems as if I had been taking her classes for 30 years. Super friendly, I found her classes to be soothing, opening, relaxing, simple and approachable, I would recommend it to all levels and all ages.
Getting Back on the Mat
On the personal side, I feel blessed by the miracle of the practice and grateful that I am back on the flow of attending a yoga class and writing about. It’s fun how this first blog is on an Iyengar yoga class, considering this was the very first style I got into when I took my first yoga classes back in… wow, 2008, f*uck, I am old. : )
It felt good to do back to back to back yoga classes on my first day. after Yoga Foundations I stayed for the Yoga Therapy: Back Care class and returned at 6 pm for Restorative Yoga. On that third class Bruno was accompanied by his mother, one of the two people who insisted Bruno to study and practice yoga. Feels like we are turning some pages. Much more coming soon.
