It’s been over five years since I had any regularity with my kundalini yoga practice. Back then I was on my way to becoming a kundalini teacher, but things didn’t go smoothly. The aligment broke and I left the practice. Did I trip onto my shadow? Was I unable to get past my patterns and pain? Did I do the right thing by walking away when I needed to? Perhaps the practice will bring the answers.
Kundalini Yoga on Yogi Bhajan’s Birthday
Awespicious and coincidental to return to his practice on the birthday of such an epic teacher. Yogi Bhajan is well known for bringing kundalini yoga to the United States and sparking this movement. One of his disiples of 20 years have birth to a child. And this child was teaching today’s class, his name is Gurmukh.
I arrived to Rally Sport just in time to grab a mat and a blanket, there were four students in class. Gurmukh was awesome, I “digged” his vibe from the very begining. Easy going, comfortably present, engaging. The way he plays the guitar is very inspiring. The class felt easier than most of the kundalini classes I have attended before. It may have been one of the most enjoyable kundalini classes I’ve ever done.
Wripe Juice through Kundalini Yoga
After class I felt calm, centered, and “wise in a quiet way”. In fact, I was feeling the benefits of the practice as soon as we started. It might have been Gurmukh’s welcoming presence, or that I was clearly ment to be there. Pumping the navel, breathing deeply, stretching, they always feel good, but kundalini yoga takes it one step further, getting our nervous system jacked up just enough to spark an awakening.
I enjoyed Gurmukh’s guidance for returning to gyan mudra and feeling the movement of prana. I also appreciated his eloquent explanation for combining mantra and vibration with visualization and intention. The seven “ek ong kars” we did in honor of Yogi Bhajan’s birthday led me into one of the most clear experiences of mantra/pranayama I’ve had in a while.
It was beautiful to feel reconected to the kundalini practice, and to find a teacher I RESONATE well with (pun intended and explicitly stated). His translations for the mantra where on point and empowering. The music he chose was lovely, it felt as if we were in ceremony. I even had a handful of emotional releases. Always good to feel we are a part of all that is, and its relieving to remember that we can get back to that knowing easily.
Bring Them On
I was surprised to see such a small class. Only four students for such an awesome teacher… feels like lots of us are missing out. Even though I really enjoyed the intimate setting, I would recomend everyone to take this class. I don’t remember what are the contraindications for kundalini kriyas but I am sure anyone can do most of the exercises or modify/shorten/skip. Definitely worth a try, it could change your life forever.
